Profile
I’m a wildlife filmmaker from Australia, focused on documenting our native animals for a global audience. I work mostly with birds, capturing their behaviour and vocalisations. I love sharing genuine wildlife moments that help people connect more deeply with the natural world.
About the Video
I walked through the forest with the EOS R6 V to document the natural world. This camera was the perfect lightweight “run-and-gun” setup for the job. It allowed me to react quickly to birds as they appeared and capture both photos and video in the moment.
Key Points / Highlights
I always seek to film interesting behaviours so the encounter with the cockatoo swinging upside down was a great moment to capture on video. From there, I focused on collecting a variety of species to add diversity to the video.
How I used the EOS R6 V
I used the EOS R6 V in a variety of ways, both handheld and on a tripod. When it came to handheld, I was able to film comfortably at 200mm, thanks to the light weight and in-body stabilisation. I used a tripod to film with the RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM and was able to zoom in even further in post, thanks to the 7K 3:2 mode(Open Gate). With the additional tripod mount on the side of the body, I also had the ability to shoot natively in portrait.
First Impression of the EOS R6 V
The EOS R6 V is a dream for content creators in the nature space because of the lightweight form factor. Unlike full sized cinema cameras, it doesn’t slow you down. You can move quickly through the wilderness whilst still having all of the features you need for cinematic video. I was blown away by how much power there was in such a small package. It allowed me to react quickly and with the (Camera) In-body IS and 3:2 shooting(Open Gate), I could quickly grab a handheld shot and reframe it in post if I needed to. Lighting conditions can be challenging under the canopy but Canon Log 2 allowed for flexibility in post. The EOS R6 V is perfect for creators that are looking to move from photography into a more cinema focused camera. It’s simple to use but packed with all of the features that you’d need to elevate your content to a professional level.
